Stephan Brigidi is Rhode Island born and returned, having spent several years in Italy and Hawaii before firmly settling in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1981. He comes from an academic background having taught various levels of photography and painting at the Universities of Hawaii and Connecticut, Rhode Island College, Providence College, Roger Williams University and for twenty years at RI School of Design.

Stephan is a Fulbright-Hays Fellow, a MacDowell Fellow and the recipient of various awards and grants for his photography, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He has extensively exhibited and published his work throughout the United States and Europe and is represented in the collections of more than two-dozen museums in the US and Europe.

Stephan is the author of two books: Angels of Pomeii, with co-author, Robert Bly, and Remarkable People: A Rhode Island Family Album- a book of portraits. Together with his wife Julie, they founded The Bristol Workshops in Photography Ltd., a fine art - commercial studio & school, now celebrating 25 years in business.

Stephan is an architectural preservationist serving on the Historic District Commission in Bristol.. He is also a member of the Town’s Open Space Commission and currently serves as President of Save Bristol Harbor, a non-profit environmental group based in Bristol, committed to preserving and protecting our natural resources. A committed civil libertarian, he formerly served as a member of the Board of the RI ACLU.

Stephan and Julie have one son, Gian-Stefano, who is a graduate student at McGill University in Montreal, and they are also the proud parents of five cats, a dog and two horses- all rescues. He and Julie continue to support animal rights causes, assist in animal rescues whenever possible, and continue to pursue a greener environment.
